Maryland Arrows will play a very physical game. Our speed will develop with physical conditioning and our player’s adaptation to each other’s style.
We’ll probably open with a veteran unit which includes Cy Coombes, Greg Marchen, Ken Henderson, Glen Lotton and Wayne Granger. Most of these men have played together at Peterboro [sic] and their experience should help us in the early stages.
The biggest surprise in training camp has been Brenden Kelly who will be our No. 1 goalie. Brenden, who was in Europe for the NLL’s Canadian player draft, expressed interest in playing for the Arrows and we picked him up in the U.S. player draft. Pat Kelly will be our No. 2 goalie.
Another surprise at training camp has been Rick McKenna.
Our most powerful offensive line will be our second unit which includes Paul Suggate, Bill Coghill, Tom Vann and the McKennas—Jerry and John.
Several of our U.S. draft choices have shown great potential and two, Mike Shumate and John Fisher have made the Arrows’ roster. Both players have had more than seven years of field lacrosse experience and are adapting extremely well to the box rules. Fisher played on the U.S. All-Star box team that took on visiting teams from Canada last year.
We believe with the gelling of our offensive and defensive lines, along with our steady goaltending, the Arrows will be a top contender for a playoff spot.
