John Davis of the second place Peterborough Lakers leads the National Lacrosse Association scoring race after two weeks of league play.
Davis has scored eight goals and assisted on 12 others for 20 points, two more than runner-up Elmer Tran of the league-leading Detroit Olympics. Tran has six goals and 12 assists but has played one more game than Davis.
Two members of the Montreal Canadiens are on the top 13 list. Michel Blanchard and Jim Richardson of the Habs are in a four-way tie for 10th spot with Detroit’s Doug Favell, star netminder for Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL in the off-season, and Michael Gates of Portland Adanacs of the NLA west division.
Blanchard has nine goals—second only to Detroit’s Ross Jones in that department (the latter has 10)—and two assists while Richardson has scored seven goals and four assists while Gates is three and eight.
Gaylord Powless, a graduate of last year’s Oshawa Green Gaels and a member of Jim Bishop’s league-leading Detroit squad, is fifth in scoring with three goals and 13 assists. Powless is regarded as the top all-round lacrosse player in Canada.
John Allen, formerly of Ville St. Pierre Saints of the Quebec Lacrosse League and now a member of Portland, is tied for seventh position with eight goals and five assists in only three games.
Detroit netminder Merv Marshall is just one point short of appearing on the top 13 scoring list with one goal and nine assists in five games. Marshall is still a junior belonging to Oshawa and will not play more than 12 games.
Canadiens netminder Bob McCready is second highest point-getter with six assists in three games. The Habs’ Blanchard is the only player with an average of three goals a game.
