By the time the ink dries on this opus, Gaylord Powless will probably have scored another four points.
Who is Gaylord Powless, you ask?
He just happens to be one of the nation’s finest athletes. He plays lacrosse in the comparative secrecy of Olympia and other stadia around the country. But because there aren’t thousands cheering doesn’t take anything away from Powless.
Gaylord is a 21-year-old, full-blooded Mohawk Indian. He’s also the most prolific scorer in professional lacrosse. So far, in 24 games, Powless has scored 105 points, including 45 goals.
Because of his tireless play the Detroit Olympics are in first place in the National Lacrosse Association.
And his scoring feats are not just a flash in the pan. Powless holds the record for most points scored in a single season, 191 in 1966, and has won virtually every honor available in his sport.
In 1964 Powless was voted Canada’s outstanding Indian athlete and was awarded the tom Longboat Trophy. He won the most valuable player award twice and was named the most sportsmanlike player in the Ontario Lacrosse Association in 1966.
Powless’ performance this year is particularly outstanding when compared with other scoring records in the league. Only one other player has 100 goals [sic] this year. The next highest scorer on the Olympics is Grant Heffernan, who is 30 points behind Powless.
Powless has averaged just under two goals a game and his point average is about 4.3 a game. If he can keep up the pace, Detroit may wind up with a pair of champions this year…in lacrosse and baseball.
