word is that lacrosse styles differ in the two areas. The western Canadian leagues are reportedly “run and gun” with the emphasis on speed and shooting. The Ontario leagues are said to stress playmaking and finesse around the net.
There is no word at this writing on who will be in either goal tonight but chances are that if Bob McCready’s bruised ribs are sufficiently healed he’ll get the nod for Boston. Rookie Greg Thomas and 1974 backup Keith Todman have geen fighting it out for the Arrows’ starting job. Todman played in the first Maryland-Boston game and you might look for him to be in the nets again.
Watch Boston’s Bram Wilfong — his teammates call him Barney — in front of the Maryland goal tonight. At 5’9”, 215 he’s a tough man to push around.
The best goaltending performance at the Garden thus far this year belongs to Montreal’s Dave Evans who turned aside 29 of 36 Boston shots Saturday night as les Quebecois beat the Bolts 16 to 7. Evans shutout Boston in the final period.
That new man in the Boston lineup is Dave Johnston, a 5’11”, 175-lb forward who joined the team Saturday, hours before suiting up for the Montreal game. Johnston played 37 games with Toronto (NLL) last year. He scored 33 goals and 26 assists for 59 points. He didn’t waste much time making his presence felt Saturday night when he took a pass from Brian Thompson and scored the Bolts’ second goal of the game at 4:39 of the first period.
Next Bolts game is Saturday at the Garden against the Long Island Tomahawks. The Tomahawks beat the Bolts in overtime here on opening night.
